EQ Pro Studio is the studio edition of EQ Pro, with professional features for mixing and mastering. It adds spectral processing that follows a resonance from note to note, static and dynamic in one band, an UP button that switches a dynamic band to upward mode, and adjustable slopes on bells and shelves. Its Flat band is a full-range compressor inside the EQ, on the whole signal or on Mid, Side, Left or Right alone. With upward mode the same band works as an expander or a noise gate. Everything EQ Pro does is in it, and EQ Pro itself stays free.

With these tools, one instance covers EQ, gain riding, compression, expansion, gating and spectral dynamics.

Resonances

Spectral band

A Spectral band reduces only the parts of its range that stick out over their surroundings, so it follows a resonance that moves from note to note instead of sitting on one frequency. One FFT window of latency, 85 ms at 48 kHz.

  • Width, amount, and how many peaks it acts on at once
  • In the other direction it lifts what is buried instead
  • Works per channel
  • Can follow a second source

Dynamics

Auto dynamics with a single control

A dynamic band in EQ Pro Studio can be set with a single value: how far it may cut or boost. The band sets everything else itself while it listens to the music. It reacts to what stands out in the current part of the song, in a quiet verse as well as in a loud chorus.

  • No threshold to set, only the range
  • No resetting between quiet and loud parts of a song
  • Switched on with AUTO in the band panel
  • With AUTO off, every control is available by hand

Bands

Static and dynamic in one band

Unlike in EQ Pro, bands can be static and dynamic at the same time. That way, it is possible to have a fixed boost or cut and a dynamic range on top of it. Both are set directly on the curve, without opening the band panel.

  • The band handle sets the fixed boost or cut, the ring around it the dynamic range
  • Dragging the ring makes a static band dynamic, a range of zero makes it static again
  • For example, a boomy range lowered a little all the time and pulled down further when it gets too loud
  • Also works in upward mode (UP)

Dynamics

Upward compression

A dynamic band in EQ Pro rests flat and pulls down when its range gets loud. UP turns that around: the band rests at its full gain and takes that move back as the range gets loud.

  • Quiet passages get the lift; the lift goes back as the range gets loud
  • With a cut instead of a boost, the band rests cut and opens up
  • Threshold, ratio, knee, attack and release as everywhere else
  • The drawn gain is the limit, so the band never moves further

Wideband

Flat band

A Flat band works on the entire frequency range. It has no frequency and no Q, only a gain, so it can be a gain stage, a compressor, an expander or a noise gate.

  • Without dynamics, a gain stage in the same curve as the rest of the moves
  • With its dynamics on, a wideband compressor; with UP, an upward compressor
  • With UP and a cut, an expander, and at a high ratio a noise gate
  • Like every other band, on Stereo, Mid, Side, Left or Right, for endless possibilities

Slopes

Adjustable slope for bells and shelves

A plain bell is a point. It always takes the most out of the middle. With Slope raised, the top flattens while the sides get steeper, up to 48 dB per octave.

  • The region gets treated, its neighbours stay where they were
  • Shelves get the same, in steps up to 96 dB per octave
  • Slope is a fourth knob on the band, 12 to 48 dB per octave on bells, 12 to 96 on shelves

Listening

Delta listen

Delta plays exactly the difference a band makes to the audio. With this, it is possible to hear what a dynamic or Spectral band does. Unlike Solo, which plays a dynamic band's part of the audio with the dynamics applied, Delta plays only what the band takes away or adds.

  • Accessible directly in the band panel
  • Makes the parts a band adds or removes audible, to judge whether they still contain wanted sound
  • Makes it easier to judge whether the chosen tool is the right one for the job
  • Makes it easier to judge whether a band's dynamics are set up well

Display

Curve zoom

Span sets the vertical scale of the curve, from ±60 dB down to ±3 dB. At a small span a tenth of a decibel is a visible move, so fine corrections can be set by eye.

  • Chosen from the SPAN menu at the top left of the curve
  • Opens by itself when a handle is dragged near the edge
  • FIT picks the closest step that still holds every band

New in both editions

EQ Pro Studio includes all improvements introduced with EQ Pro 1.3.

  • Undo and Redo for the last 50 edits, deleted bands included
  • Adaptive release, so short gaps between notes open a dynamic band less
  • Analyzer, slope, decay, landmarks and piano roll set directly on the curve
  • Finer band gain, in steps of 0.01 dB

EQ Pro stays free and keeps growing. Nothing in the left column ever moves to the right one. The EQ Pro page describes each of those in full.

How it works

Studio is a separate plug-in. It installs next to EQ Pro under its own name, so both appear in your host and a project keeps whichever one it was built with.

Download it and run it. Without a key it runs in full: every control works, and projects save and load unharmed. After the first ten minutes of a session the audio goes quiet for a second now and then, so you can hear what it does before you decide.

A key is a small file. It carries your name and your email address, it works offline, on every machine you own, and there is no account to create. If it gets lost, it can be sent again from this site.
